According to Econsultancy blogger Patricio Robles, 'nofollow' is one of the most effective ways of ensuring that a website's outbound linking does not harm its own SEO.
In order to achieve a high page ranking, web publishers should always include links out to other sites as doing so ensures links back.
This, therefore, will achieve a website a higher SEO ranking.
However, if a web publisher is weary about a site that it is linking out to, rather than not link out, it should use the 'nofollow' attribute, Mr Robles claimed.
He advised: "When linking to third party websites, add 'nofollow' to those that you're not so familiar with or that have other content you're not so sure about.
"Consider every link you give to be a 'recommendation' and recognise that just like in real life, recommendations come with varying levels of enthusiasm."
This comes shortly after industry expert Stephen Riegel wrote on a BtoB blog that marketers need to ensure they get the most out of their SEO if they want to cope during the recession.
