Website design services are used by around two-fifths of online retailers, new research has found.
According to a study by Practical eCommerce, 40 per cent of web-based stores have sought assistance in areas such as HMTL, CSS and JavaScript coding and implementing ecommerce platforms.
As well as this, 30.7 per cent stated they have sought external help in the area of search engine optimisation, while graphic design specialists were used by 33.3 per cent of companies.
Web development firms also proved popular, with around a third of companies with annual revenue under $50,000 (£30,600) using these for assistance in areas such as the customisation of shopping cart software and platforms.
Web development services were used by 66.7 per cent of companies that generate more than $10 million in annual revenues and the report noted that it is "not surprising that relatively larger companies tended to be more likely to use professional web development services", as they are more likely to want to customise their platforms.
Earlier this month, eConsultancy urged online retailers to focus on improving their customer services and speed up their response to queries in order to boost their performance and profits.
