Advice offered on website usability

Information needs to be presented concisely in a way that is easy to find and understand.
An expert has offered advice for companies looking to boost the usability of their website and provide visitors with a satisfying experience.
Shailesh Manga from consulting firm Optimal Usability told the New Zealand Herald it is important to ensure information is presented in a concise way that is easy to understand.
But he said poor design of navigational elements can undo good work on the organisation and categorisation of information, as users can find themselves lost within the site if links and navigation bars are inadequate.
"It should be obvious to visitors where they are at every page, where they can go and where they've been," he explained, pointing out that visual cues such as colours and icons can aid travel around the site.
He also recommended that companies make use of pictures and diagrams to illustrate facts, ideas and principles, which often elicit a better response than words.
Considering the needs of disabled users is also very important, as according to the European commission many web users have difficulty navigating websites due to small text and other design elements.
