Google has launched a new tool that aims to use the opinions of web users to make it easier to find relevant information on the internet
The search engine giant has introduced a Sidewiki - which appears as a sidebar in a browser and enables those looking at websites to view and add to comments made by other viewers.
It had been in development with various news agencies and internet experts prior to its introduction and Google stated that the system will make it easier for people that are searching for specific information on the web.
An algorithm has been used that ensures the "most useful, high-quality entries" are displayed at the top of the Sidewiki toolbar and the company noted that it has "worked hard" to devise a method that ensures the best information is given prominence.
"It takes into account feedback from you and other users, previous entries made by the same author and many other signals we developed," the company said on its blog.
Sidewiki is currently available for Firefox and Internet Explorer and the firm is working on making it compatible with its own Chrome browser.
Earlier this week, Google added new features to its Analytics programme, including the Event Tracking tool that lets users see how long it takes to load online videos.
