The VoIP phone system has been voted as the best-performing industry of the last ten years, having experienced growth of 179,035.8 per cent.

This is according to figures from IBISWorld, which saw the technology exceed the rate of expansion for all sectors, including the search engine market, which increased by 1,655 per cent, About.com reports.

Benefits of using VoIP for business were highlighted by the news source, which stated that is cost-effective and makes communication free "in many ways". It is also able to adapt to other technologies, such as WiMax, 3G and Wi-Fi.

Senior analyst with IBISWorld George Van Horn noted that VoIP has moved from being unknown to becoming a huge application "targeting telecom carriers' voice revenues".

It is, he went on to say, the "primary beneficiary of the next leg in telecom's service development cycle".

In addition, the analytics firm, which has been operating for more than 35 years, forecast that the relatively new industry - which came onto the market officially in 2002 - will continue to perform above its competitors in the decade to come.

However, "a more realistic and linear percentage" of 149.6 per cent is to be predicted for the years 2010 to 2019, About.com observed.
