Technology company Apple could possibly be entering into negotiations to acquire VoIP firm iCall for anything between $50 million (£30.7 million) and $60 million, news which may be of interest to internet marketing consultants already using the company's services.
This is according to Dan Frommer who, in an article for the Business Insider, noted that this was brought to his attention by a reader of the news source, although he has been as yet unable to confirm this.
Observing that Apple has been looking to different technologies in recent weeks - having purchased music start-up Lala and expressing interest in AdMob prior to Google making an offer - Mr Frommer said that a VoIP deal made sense for the business in the long term.
"It is a good idea," he remarked, although he did state that such a move was likely to irritate carrier partners of Apple, as the majority of their income is from voice phone services.
Mr Frommer asserted the fact that, according to the chief executive of the company, iCall already has over 100,000 iPhone users utilising its system, which could make it all the more appealing to Apple.
"As data networks evolve, it will be possible to make calls as well over the internet as by using a voice network and cheaper," he continued.
Earlier this year, Apple Insider reported that Apple had plans to include new features in iChat 4.0 that would put it on a par with other VoIP solutions, such as Google, Microsoft and Skype.
