A unified communications system could offer a number of advantages to businesses, experts have advised.

Businesses have been encouraged to consider the efficiency gains that a unified communications system can bring.

According to Analysis Mason, creating a single infrastructure for voice, video data and email could have a number of benefits.

For example, the organisation it said may bring out the best in many employees, as some of these people will be used to instant information and connectivity.

In addition, it stated that this would help colleagues interact with each other rather than work independently.

George Robertson, senior consultancy at Analysis Mason, commented: "[They] want access to the information they require, whenever and wherever they need it."

He added that a unified communications system could help make this possible and improve people's work as a result.

This comes after research firm IDC predicted that almost a fifth of small and medium-sized enterprises would install Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) solutions in the next year.
