Twitter Continues to Grow and Evolve - Defying the Pundits who had Declared it a Fad
Micro-blogging site Twitter has proved itself to be more than just a flash in the pan, it has been suggested.
Tim Gibbon, co-founder and editor of the Social Media Portal, said the sheer extent of its growth shows the service remains of interest to the general internet-using public. "Socially driven services can grow quickly when there is interest, especially as it hits a mainstream audience," he explained.
Mr Gibbon highlighted that as the media has latched on to Twitter activity, this has helped to boost the profile of the site even further, undoubtedly also increasing its following. In many cases, popular sites experience a dip in popularity, which is then followed by a slow period of reduction once interest has peaked, he acknowledged. "Twitter has currently bucked this trend and continues to grow," Mr Gibbon added.
It is likely that the service will continue to evolve, he predicted, which in turn may generate more users and an increase in the number of people Tweeting about their day to day activities.
According to web analytics service Gigatweet, Twitter has surpassed 15 billion Tweets, reaching five billion in October 2009 and ten billion in early March 2010.
