Twitter not looking at ads for monetisation 20/05/2009 John Burns wrote: Twitter co-founder Biz Stone has revealed that the website is not currently considering using advertising as a way of making money.

Twitter is not looking at advertising as a way of generating revenues at present, one of the co-founders of the microblogging site has revealed.

Speaking to the Reuters Global Technology Summit via videolink, Biz Stone said that Twitter is currently building numerous add-on tools and services aimed at professional and business users.

Some of these are likely to be launched by the end of this year and could be a viable source of revenue for the website, he explained.

One of the main reasons for avoiding the use of ads at present is that deploying ads may be an annoyance for users, Mr Stone added, noting that Twitter also does not have the resources in place to handle an ad business.

"There are a few reasons why we're not pursuing advertising - one is it's just not quite as interesting to us," he commented, according to Reuters.

Mr Stone also revealed that Twitter intends to double its workforce from the current 40 employees by the end of 2009.

According to Hitwise, UK traffic to Twitter rose 32-fold in the 12 months to March 2009 and the site is now one of the most popular social networks among British internet users.
