Firefox becomes top web browser in Europe by Kate Billinghurst 02/04/2009 Firefox overtook Internet Explorer 7 to become the most used web browser in Europe last week, it has been revealed.
Mozilla's Firefox browser became the most popular web browser in Europe last week, overtaking Internet Explorer 7 (IE 7) in the process, new figures have revealed.

According to StatCounter, Firefox 3 - which was released last summer - accounted for 35 per cent of the European market last week, compared with IE 7's 34.54 per cent share.

Commenting on the findings, Aodhan Cullen, chief executive and founder of StatCounter, said that while the market shift can be partly attributed to the recent launch of IE 8, Firefox is also continuing to expand its overall share of the web browser sector.

"The data shows that Firefox is closing the gap and is now just per cent behind all IE versions in Europe," he went on to add.

StatCounter findings may lend weight to the argument for web developers ensuring their sites work across all browsers, not just the various versions of IE.

According to Net Applications, IE had a global market share of 66.82 per cent in March, compared with Firefox's 22.05 per cent share.

Other top browsers included Safari (8.23 per cent), Google Chrome (1.23 per cent) and Opera (0.7 per cent).
