Search engine optimisation (SEO) firms might be able to boost their website ranking thanks to new technology unveiled by Google this week.
The search engine giant has announced advancement in its optical character recognition (OCR) technology, which will mean that its searches can detect and index words contained within a larger number of scanned documents.
Many scanned documents on the internet contain images of text, rather than text itself, meaning they rarely feature in online search results.
However, SEO firms which use Adobe’s PDF scanned documents within their website design could benefit from Google searches, which will now be able to search and index this content more efficiently than before.
Evin Levey, product manager at Google, said: “This is a small but important step forward in our mission of making all the world's information accessible and useful.”
IT expert Arnold Zafra, writing for the Search Engine Journal, commented that this simple and useful feature means Google has upped its competition among other search engine firms.
Earlier this month, the group announced changes to its Google Analytics service, which will enable SEO firms to break down search results and achieve a more detailed profile of internet users’ online habits.
