The use of software-as-a-service (SaaS) and other cloud computing-related technologies is likely to increase over the next six years, a new report has predicted.
According to a publication from Research and Markets, the sector will be worth $160.2 billion (£97 billion) by 2015, up from $36 billion in 2008.
The research firm said that there will be "significant growth" in the use of web-based applications for automated processes, with the amount of information set to be available on the cloud to increase over the time period.
"Worldwide cloud computing is poised to achieve significant growth," Research and Markets said in a statement, adding that the use of enterprise software will also grow in popularity between now and 2015.
It added that this coming change in the use of information and computers "has long been envisioned" by Google, which has opened up application development tools to users in an effort to make sure clouds reach their potential by being "as easy to programme as it is to navigate the web".
According to THINK Strategies, SaaS has a number of benefits to companies, including improved risk management, low up-front costs and greater levels of reliability and security.
