Google Newspass to make its debut? 23/06/2010 Google being cagey about new advertising channel (Craig Nicholson)

Fast on the Heels of Twitter's Promoted Tweets, Google may soon offer Paid Links in Google News

A new service is set to be launched by Google, giving people access to paid-for news content.

Newspass will enable publishers to make payments for links to their sites through Google News, La Repubblica newspaper revealed.

The Italian publication claimed that many major news providers have been contacted about the prospect, which may be launched in the coming months.

When users conduct a Google News search, they would be presented with both paid and unpaid results and if they decide to click on the former, they will be charged through Google Checkout.

Should they refuse to make the payment, the content will not be accessible.

Google has so far failed to confirm or deny the proposals, however the Guardian has noted that the claims sound similar to those put forward to the Newspaper Association of America in a document last September.

Sam Tilston, search engine optimisation director of ideaTaxi.com, recently emphasised that there are vast differences between the ways in which Google and Bing rank content.

"Google News is usually selected through a submission process, you can find out how to do it on their website," the expert explained.
