Internet Advertising Industry implements it's own PR Campaign
The US Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) has announced that it is launching a new advertising campaign in response to claims that the industry invades the privacy of consumers.
Created by Schematic, the scheme is made up of banner ads that display the slogan 'Advertising is creepy', as well as 'Hey, this banner can tell where you live. Mind if we come over and sell you stuff?' Econsultancy reports.
The body's decision to instigate the initiative comes as a response to attitudes that consider internet marketing consultants' techniques to be invasive and defends the position that ad targeting and following behaviour on the web must be employed in order to "make advertising more useful to consumers".
Already, large companies have indicated their support for the campaign, with firms such as YouTube, Microsoft and AOL pledging to provide a total of 500 million impressions for the IAB.
Meghan Keane of Econsultancy noted that a lot of the confusion among the public in relation to this matter "comes down to consumer ignorance", a feeling that the IAB hopes to change.
And earlier in the year, the IAB began Privacy Matters, an education campaign aimed at consumers, designed to educate people and help them manage their privacy on the internet.
A separate website, Privacy Matters provides members of the public with access to resources and tools, as well as information relating to such concerns. The body noted that it is hoped this will help improve transparency and data security, among other things.
