Figures suggest increase in ecommerce 31/10/2009 Andy Carter wrote: Are you anticipating a rise in online shoppers this Christmas?

The majority of online shoppers will maintain or increase the amount of purchases they make online this Christmas.

This is according to a new study from eBay Advertising, which found that 85 per cent of respondents will not cut down on the number of items they order from the web, UTalkMarketing reports.

According to the findings, over one-third (37 per cent) will spend more this year than they did during the festive season in 2008, with clothes and consumer electronics two of the most popular items among shoppers in the UK.

Internet marketing consultants may also wish to note that the majority (60 per cent) of shoppers are most receptive to web advertising while they are browsing an online retailer, with only seven per cent taking in similar marketing while using social networks.

Phillip Rinn of the eBay explained that "understanding how to engage with the online consumer" is a key part of running a successful ecommerce business.

He stated that doing research into the reason why different groups are encouraged to buy over the web will help companies increase their sales.

The Interactive Media in Retail Group recently noted that internet retailers based in the UK are becoming more popular with shoppers located overseas.
