Microsoft is considering implementing advertisements into captcha systems, it has emerged.
According to WebProNews, the computer giant has filed a placement to place ads in the areas - also known as the boxes web users have to fill in with a predetermined word in order to complete a task on a website.
The move would see the randomly-generated words used in the captcha system replaced with the names of products or services.
The news source noted that while the move would have no click-through benefits for a company, it would help to raise its profile.
However, some firms may not wish to be associated with the use of captcha, as many internet users consider them to be invasive and annoying.
"What you would not want to do is start displaying more captchas specifically for the purpose of advertising," the report noted, adding that the "interesting" strategy has a number of benefits and drawbacks.
Last month, Microsoft signed a ten-year deal with Yahoo in an attempt to take some of the search market away from Google.
However, a poll from ClickZ suggested that the majority of marketers would not increase their spending with the two firms despite the partnership.
