Twitter change a boost for advertising to mobile devices 26/07/2010 The battle for mobile advertising dominance between Google Buzz and Twitter (Kate Billinghurst)

image of swirling water - the unsettled developments in mobile

The Hype is moving from Video Marketing to Mobile Marketing but sometime soon the latter will be big and established just as Video is now

The announcement that Twitter is to launch promoted tweets - those which are paid-for and appear at the top of search results - presents an exciting time for the industry.

This is according to Tom Ollerton, a member of the Internet Advertising Bureau, who highlighted that mobile advertising in particular looks set to benefit from the move.

Promoted tweets will be clearly labelled as such when an advertiser has paid for them, but in every other respect they will be posted as ordinary tweets from the general public.

Furthermore, Twitter will attempt to measure whether the tweets resonate with users and stop showing those which do not have an impact.

Mr Ollerton explained: "This is an area that presents real opportunities for brands, retailers in particular, who should be able to capitalise on the loyalty of their local followers with special offers and mobile vouchers and codes."

He believes the other internet-based tools such as Google Buzz have already tried to infiltrate this area of the marketing world, although Twitter could possibly dominate.

Its mobile presence in particular gives the micro-blogging site massive potential, he added, suggesting that mobile marketers should watch this space.
