Google is set to acquire mobile display advertising firm AdMob. The search engine giant announced it has signed an agreement to purchase the US company, a move that suggests it is looking to expand its operations in the mobile marketing sector.
In a post on Google's blog, vice-president of product management Susan Wojcicki and vice-president of engineering Vic Gundotra said that the company is of the belief that "great mobile advertising products" will help the mobile internet grow further.
"For publishers of mobile websites and applications, this deal will mean better products and tools and more effective monetisation of their content," the pair said in a statement, adding that firms will be able to switch their attention to their customers rather than focusing on how to generate revenue.
And web users will also benefit, the blog entry noted, as mobile content will improve and "better mobile ads that deliver useful information" will become commonplace, while advertisers will be able to take advantage of "more interesting [and] engaging formats". Earlier this month, Google announced the launch of Commerce Search, a new tool designed to help online retailers locate their goods online.
