UK Internet Search Statistics 16/10/2009 Tony Thornby wrote: Figures on how UK users browse and search the web

N.B. These figures are for August 2009 and were sourced from Keyword Discovery.  If you are interested in the figures for other countries, you can find them there.

Keyword Length (in UK)

These figures show that 4+ searches are rare:  But they are still often far stronger buying phrases than the research 1 and 2 word searches.

Words Percentage
1 26.45%
2 45.81%
3 17.71%
4 5.66%
5 2.38%
6 1.05%
7 0.50%
8 0.25%
9 0.13%
10 0.06%

Percentage of Organic Listing Clicks

N.B.  This table shows the percentage of all clicks:  It does not reflect how many clicks are made in the organic results after each search.  Other research has suggested that position 10 actually gets a higher percentage of clicks than 7 or 8 - the suggested psychology being that people will try the last item in preference to moving to the next search result page or trying a new search.

Position Percentage
1 45.71%
2 30.85%
3 13.59%
4 5.05%
5 2.43%
6 1.14%
7 0.62%
8 0.29%
9 0.18%
10 0.15%

Search Engine Share (in UK)

I'm sure that Bing is used.  But the figures do show that the surge in interest has now subsided.  Despite it being a USA search engine, Google has a higher percentage of the market in the UK than in its home country.

Search Engine Percentage
Google 89.57%
Yahoo 5.22%
Bing (MSN) 0.00%
ASK 3.54%
Other 1.19%

Percentage of Searches that Generated a Click

I have some problem with these figures.  Gut feeling and my own practice would suggest that I often try several listings on the first page of search results.  I would also be very concerned if any of my Adwords campaigns were generating an average CTR (clicks as a percentage of advert appearances) of 0.38%.  I've just started a Tweetup (in Twitter) using the hashtag #clicks - search for the hashtag to see or join in the conversation.
