A New Era dawns on the web as the Innovators become Global Brands

Several companies, including Yahoo! and Google, have been ranked as "truly global online brands" in a new report conducted by GfK Technology, a market research company that provides analysis for the UK and overseas.

The Connected Life survey, which looked at trends in Germany, Britain, the US, China and France, discovered that brands MSN, Skype, Google, iTunes, YouTube and Yahoo! all have a strong international presence.

Divisional director at GfK Technology Babita Earle noted that "real global players" are beginning to emerge, despite the fact that there is still "considerable fragmentation in terms of the number of providers across these services internationally".

However, she went on to observe that there is room in the market for smaller internet marketing consultant businesses and others to offer "specialist services" and give more established companies some competition.

According to the research, MSN is a dominant player in the instant messaging (IM) sector and features in the top three in all countries surveyed.

In addition, in terms of online video, YouTube is the strongest force, although it currently has no presence in China, which concentrates on YouKu and CCTV.

And Google has "a stranglehold" on the world when it comes to location services, ranking in the top three for consumer popularity in all of the five places questioned.
