The Winners, Losers and Newcomers
It was the beginning of March 2000 when the dotcom bubble supposedly burst, so it’s interesting to see how the top websites have changed over the last decade. Below is a (Hitwise) list of the top 20 websites in the UK for the week ending March 6th 2010, with Google and Facebook topping the list.

Hotmail and Yahoo are still in the top 20, as is lastminute.com. Ebay and Amazon remain the top UK retail websites. Boo.com failed but other similar websites are now doing well, maybe indicating that Boo was just ahead of its time.
The biggest overall losers back in 2000 were actually the so called alternative operators who had sprung up to challenge the traditional Telcos and the organisations, such as Nortel, who had become reliant on their business and had (in some cases) finances their equipment purchases.
Todays prominent new websites, such as BBC and YouTube, owe as much of their success to arrival of broadband and streaming media as anything else - which were merely dreams in the dial-up days of 2000.
