The term Web 2.0 has been declared the millionth word in the English language by the Global Language Monitor.

According to the language group, the word should be officially recognised because it has been used more than 25,000 times.

Web 2.0 is more widely used than n00b (meaning a new player or internet forum user), slumdog and Jai Ho, of which the latter two are phrases from the movie Slumdog Millionaire.

BBC arts correspondent Lawrence Pollard said that dictionaries have different standards to define a new word, such as the length of time it has been in use.

However, the term Web 2.0 does not seem to have taken over Australia so thoroughly.

CRN Australia reports the results of a poll by Dynamic Markets for Websense which found that 54 per cent of IT professionals mistakenly think that Web 2.0 includes email providers.

In addition, 48 per cent thought that it covers wikis while 30 per cent believe that sites which allow photos to be uploaded can be classed as Web 2.0.
