Website promotion may be important for brands wishing to take advantage of the upcoming Super Sunday - December 6th - as online auction house eBay has stated that it expects to see more than a million Christmas presents bought on its site by nearly five million users during the week from November 29th.
According to the web-based bazaar, 14 gifts are predicted to be bought each second on December 6th.
This suggests that high website rankings on search engines such as Google during this period may boost the profits of ecommerce companies.
Further research from eBay also revealed that Britons are more inclined to make holiday purchases on the internet this year, with 89 per cent stating that they plan to conduct transactions over the web.
This is an increase of 16 per cent on 2008 and spokeswoman for the company Julia Hutton-Potts remarked that the "doom and gloom" of the recession appears to have sent people in search of "early Christmas cheer".
"Brits have been hitting the virtual pavements instead of the high street in order to compare prices and seek out the best deals," she said.
In addition, eBay's latest Online Business Index revealed that sales over the yuletide period are expected to contribute to almost one-fifth of internet-based brands' annual turnover, which may prompt businesses to concentrate on attracting and converting customers.
