Shopping over the internet is set to be popular with many Britons this Christmas, according to new research.
Figures from online payment service PayPal show that almost 27 million intend to make purchases online during the festive period, with over three-quarters (76 per cent) of people surveyed stating that they will do some or all of their Christmas shopping on the web.
Saving money was highlighted as the number one reason why purchasers would turn to ecommerce businesses, while free delivery and convenience were also highlighted as factors.
However, the data showed that some shoppers may be compromising their security, as just 14 per cent said they would look to buy from a trusted or secure retailer.
Head of risk and security at PayPal Garreth Griffith said there is "no need" to compromise on security when buying online. "If the deal looks like it is too good to be true then just take a minute or two to check it out," he advised. Last month, eBay Advertising found that 85 per cent of those questioned will not cut down on the amount they spend on the web over the holiday season.
